Falcon
Open-source foundation models from the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi — among the first truly open, commercially licensed large language models
Fully open-source with commercial-use Apache 2.0 license; free to download and run
Overview
Falcon is a family of open-source large language models developed by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi. The Falcon models were among the first truly open-weight LLMs to match closed-source performance, making them foundational to the open AI ecosystem. Falcon 180B was briefly the largest open-weight model available.
Key Features
- Open weights with permissive Apache 2.0 license for commercial use
- Model sizes from 1B to 180B parameters for different compute budgets
- Trained on RefinedWeb, a high-quality curated web dataset
- Strong multilingual capabilities across English, French, German, Spanish, and more
- Instruction-tuned variants (Falcon-Instruct) for chat and task completion
- Available on Hugging Face for easy download and fine-tuning
